Marvellous Art Nouveau box, around 1910, possibly
Germany but uncertain.
The top plate shows a delicate drawing of a lounging young woman.
Against the background of the dark wall decoration stands the
sofa she is resting on. Her dress is looking as if she is attending
a ball or a similar festivity.
Draped around her is a scarf with roses. Her cute round face is
surrounded by full hair that is drawn in a way typical for Art
Nouveau. She is looking at somebody or something in the same room.
To her right is hanging a globe shaped lamp and in the left corner
is standing a huge globe.
All the lines of the drawing (some of them as for the hair extreme
thin) are engraved by hand and then filled with black colour.
With few lines the artist was able to create this wonderful atmosphere.
The materials that were used are white, black and tortoiseshell
coloured celluloid plates of 2 millimetres thickness veneered
on wood.
The interior is mahogany. The interior rims have been carefully
coloured to the appearance of tortoiseshell continuing the pattern
that is given by the plates on the sides.
The hinge is of brass and got obviously silver-plated.
The celluloid was used on this box as ivory, tortoiseshell and
ebony were used before. Lets look for example at how the top plate
was made. It is put together of 9 parts counting the 4 small parts
on the corners, the 2 black plates at the sides, the two thin
lines that separate them from the drawing and the drawing itself.
This could have been made much easier by taking one plate and
engrave lines to give the impression as if it was put together
out of parts. Or consider the plates on the side that were cut
and then glued to cover the body continuing the pattern. And not
to forget the skilfully applied tortoiseshell painting on the
rims.
Without any doubt this box is of high quality in design a making
and an outstanding collectors item.
Caja art nouveau de hacia 1910.
Absolutamente maravillosa caja art nouveau de hacia
1910, posiblemente alemana.
La tapa muestra un delicado dibujo de una joven dama recostada.
El sofá en el que descansa destaca en el fondo oscuro de
la pared. Su vestido parece como si fuera a un baile u otro evento
social similar.
Está envuelta en un chal con rosas. Su bello rostro redondeado
esta rodeado por su cabello que está representado con una
forma típica del art nouveau. La dama está mirando
a algo o a alguien que está en la misma habitación.
A su derecha hay una lámpara de techo con forma de globo
y en la izquierda una gran bola del mundo.
Todas las líneas de la imagen (algunas de ellas como las
del cabello extremadamente finas) están grabadas a mano
rellenas de color negro. Con unas pocas líneas el artista
fue capaz de crear esta maravillosa atmósfera.
Los materiales utilizados son planchas de celuloide de 2 mm de
espesor, en blanco (imitando marfil), negro (imitando ébano)
y concha de tortuga, sobre base de madera.
El interior es madera de caoba. Los bordes interiores han sido
coloreados cuidadosamente para darles la apariencia de carey y
así continuar con el patrón de las paredes exteriores.
La bisagra es de latón que fue obviamente plateado.
El celuloide se ha utilizado en esta caja del mismo modo que antes
fueron utilizados el marfil, el ébano y la concha de tortuga.
Veamos por ejemplo como fue realizada la tapa. Esta compuesta
de nueve piezas, contando las cuatro pequeñas esquineras,
las dos piezas negras de los lados, las dos delgadas líneas
que los separan del motivo central y la pieza con el motivo central.
Esto se podría haber hecho de un modo mucho más
fácil, tomando una única placa y grabado las líneas
que simularan la sensación de que fueran varias. También
debemos considerar las paredes laterales, donde las dos placas
del cuerpo y de la tapa que forman cada lado fueron cortadas y
pegadas de modo que el diseño encajara perfectamente. No
nos olvidemos también de los bordes interiores imitando
hábilmente el carey.
Sin ninguna duda esta caja es de una alta calidad en diseño
y factura y un objeto de coleccionista excepcional.
