Art deco Tea or Tobacco box (Germany,
about 1920).
This Art Deco tea-tobacco box surprises in a first
look with its Biedermeier appearance. This can be explained by
the fact that the Biedermeier-style with its clear and clean forms
inspired the art-deco-design. Over a black base supported by flat-round
feet the square body rises to the cover. Black lines of 4 millimetres
width along the borders structure the body and the cover. The
wood that appears in the fields between the lines is what we believe
massive birch and birch-flame stained to an interesting effect.
Dark brown parts change with parts of a deep glowing tone of honey.
The cover raises about 2 cm. to the centre and carries the handle,
formed by a 4-sided pyramid on a short round stem growing out
of a round base.
The body of the box consists of two massive blocks of wood, which
were glued together and the interior of about 9cms diameter and
9cms depth got drilled or turned out.
Into this hole a can made out of sheet zinc was applied with a
fitting cover that is screwed to the wooden top. These parts fit
exactly into each other and were protecting the tobacco from drying.
In fact the inside still smells as pipe tobacco!!!
This box yet got nothing else but some cleaning. The surface is
still in a nice condition although there are some dents and scratches,
but a refinishing of the surface would also destroy the mild craquelé
of ageing.

Caja para tabaco o te Art deco (Alemania, hacia 1920).
Esta caja para tabaco o te art deco, sorprende a
primera vista por su aspecto Biedermeier. Esto se explica por
el hecho de que el estilo Biedermeier con sus formas claras y
limpias inspiró el diseño del art deco. Sobre una
base negra (ebonizada) apoyada en 4 pies redondos aplanados, se
alza el cuerpo cuadrado hasta la tapa. El cuerpo y la tapa están
delineados por líneas negras de 4 mm. La madera que aparece
en los marcos entre las líneas creemos casi con toda seguridad
que es abedul macizo y abedul flameado teñidos dando un
efecto interesante. Partes marrón oscuro alternan con partes
de un intenso color miel. La tapa se eleva unos 2 cms. en el centro
y soporta el pomo, formado por una forma piramidal de 4 lados
sobre una parte redondeada en su base.
El cuerpo de la caja consiste en 2 bloques de madera maciza encolados
y cuyo interior se ha vaciado para formar un cilindro de unos
9cms. de diámetro por 9 cms. de profundidad.
En esta cavidad se ha insertado un recipiente de estaño
con su tapa que esta fijada en la tapa de la caja. Estas partes
encajan perfectamente y protegían el tabaco para que no
se seque. De hecho el interior todavía huele a tabaco de
pipa!!!
Esta caja solo ha sido limpiada. La superficie esta todavía
en una condición buena a pesar de presentar algunos rasguños
y “dientes”, pero una restauración de la superficie
destruiría el suave craquelado de la edad.
