Funny Pick-a-Cigarette bird box with music.
The box is German and the music mechanism Swiss made by the prestigious
maker “Thorens”. We would date it around 1950.
When you push the lever besides the bird or its tail the bird
will lean forward. At the same time a little drawer with a cigarette
slides out and the animal picks it up with its peak. When the
cigarette dispenser opens the music start to play until the song
is finished, about 12 sec.
The model itself is not unusual, but normally doesn’t appear
with the music mechanism.
The song is “Im Tiefen Keller sitz ich hier“, something
as “ I am sitting in the deep (wine) cellar” a lively
traditional German song when you get a bit “tipsy”.
It is made of walnut wood with the base and the cover round knob
ebonised. The four feet are black bakelit. The bird is hand painted.
The condition is very good; the complete mechanism is working
perfectly.

Divertida caja con pájaro expendedor de cigarrillos
y música. La caja es alemana y el mecanismo musical hecho
en Suiza por la prestigiosa casa “Thorens”. En nuestra
opinión data de alrededor de 1950.
Cuando se empuja la palanca junto al pájaro o su cola,
este se inclina. Al mismo tiempo se abre un pequeño compartimiento
con un cigarrillo que el pájaro coge con su pico. Cuando
el expendedor con el cigarrillo se abre comienza a sonar la música
hasta que termina la canción, aproximadamente 12 seg.
El modelo en si mismo no es inusual, pero normalmente no aparece
con el mecanismo musical.
La canción es “Im Tiefen Keller sitz ich hier“,
algo así como “Estoy sentado en la bodega”
una alegre canción tradicional alemana cuando se está
“un poco alegre”.
La caja es de madera de nogal con la base y el pomo de la tapa
ebanizados. Las cuatro patas son de baquelita negra. El pájaro
está pintado a mano.
La condición es muy buena, todo el mecanismo funciona perfectamente.
