Simulated Carey tortoiseshell sewing

Very interesting sewing box from the Biedermeier
time, Germany around 1820-30.
It is veneered with thick saw-cut birch-tree and then dyed with
an interesting technique that is simulating Carey tortoiseshell,
a very expensive and luxurious material not longer available.
This is something not seen very often and in fact we have had
only two boxes decorated in this way.
The form is typical for a sewing box from the period and style.
The inside is divided in compartments for the sewing tools and
the yarns. It was having probably covers on some of them as we
have seen in other boxes, but they are not present.
The escutcheon and the little knob for opening the box are made
of brass.
The hinges, lock and key are the original ones and in a perfect
working condition.
It has got a subtle layer of new French polishing.
It has some normal age related marks on the top as you can see
on the pictures.

Muy interesante caja costurero de la época
Biedermeier. Alemania hacia 1820-30.
Esta chapada con una gruesa chapa de abedul cortada a sierra y
después teñida con una interesante técnica
que imita al aspecto de la concha de la tortuga Carey, un material
muy caro y lujoso que ya no está disponible.
Esta técnica no se ve muy a menudo y de hecho nosotros
solo hemos tenido dos cajas decoradas de este modo.
La forma es típica para una caja de costura de su época
y estilo.
El interior está dividido en compartimentos para los útiles
de costura y los hilos. Probablemente tenía pequeñas
tapas sobre algunos de ellos como hemos visto en otras cajas,
pero no están presentes.
La bocallave y el pequeño pomo para abrirla son de latón.
Las bisagras, cerradura y llave son las originales y están
en perfecto orden de funcionamiento.
Ha recibido una ligera capa de goma laca.
Tiene algunas señales relacionadas con la edad en la tapa
como puede verse en las fotos.
