Jugendstil Marquetry Box.
Wonderful and unusual Jugendstil Box. Germany, 1890-1900.
The eight-sided shape is giving this box a very special and uncommon
appearance.
It is made of that we think is aspen wood with mahogany, rosewood
and mother of pearl inlaid on the outside and a surprising interior
with the sides veneered with bird’s-eye maple. Considering
its normally bright colour, here it is may be dyed.
On the top it has a wonderful marquetry work depicting a symmetric
scene with two birds on a tree branch. The birds and the tree’s
flowers are made of mother of pear inlaid.
Around the body we find mahogany inlaid on the eight sides.
On each the front and the back you see a pair of symmetric peacocks
standing on a base. The peacock’s tail-feathers are forming,
in contrast with the base background, a very naturalistic Jugendstil
decoration.
On the two sides we find a silhouette of an eighteenth century
fashion man.
On the four corner sides the initials “KR” in ligature
can be read.
The hinges, the lock and the key are original and in perfect working
condition.
The box has not been restored and it is in a very good original
condition. As usual the lid shows a bit more wear than the sides.

Caja Jugendstil de Marquetería.
Maravillosa e inusual caja Jugendstil. Alemania,
1890-1900.
La forma octogonal le da a esta caja un aspecto muy especial y
poco común.
Está realizada en lo que nosotros creemos que es madera
de álamo con incrustaciones de palisandro, caoba y nácar
para el exterior y un sorprendente interior chapado con arce de
ojo de perdiz. Puede que éste esté teñido,
dado su intenso color.
En la tapa tiene un maravilloso trabajo de marquetería
mostrando una escena simétrica con dos pájaros sobre
una rama de árbol. Los pájaros y las flores son
de incrustaciones de nácar.
Alrededor del cuerpo de la caja encontramos incrustaciones de
caoba en los ocho lados.
En el frente y en la trasera una pareja simétrica de pavos
reales sobre una base. Las colas de estos forman, en contraste
con el fondo de la base, una decoración Jugendstil muy
naturalística.
En los laterales aparece la silueta de un hombre a la moda del
S. XVIII.
En las cuatro esquinas las iniciales “KR” ligadas.
Las bisagras, cerradura y llave son las originales y en perfecta
condición de funcionamiento.
La caja no ha sido restaurada y está en una condición
original muy buena. Como es normal, la tapa tiene un poco mas
de desgaste que los lados.
