Late Biedermeier box.
Lets call it a black pearl that unveils its beauty
not on the first view. It follows the appearance of a suitcase
of these times in the way of wicker baskets and closed by two
leather straps with belt buckles on the top. These are carved
carefully and well detailed.
The plates that form the body and cover have been shaped with
a special plane to the appearance of parallel sticks. The carved
belt was laid in and glued on after the body parts were assembled.
This box is one of the few that is not veneered but made out of
massive wood (most of the boxes have an corpus out of conifer,
in general pine). The wood may be linden tree or another suitable
wood for carving. It’s stained very dark brown so that it
appears nearly black.
The age of this box is difficult to estimate. By looking at the
locksmiths work it could have been made somewhere around 1850-60.
Interesting is the fact that it carries the signature "S
BS" on the bottom. The way this signature is applied makes
it very probable that this is a makers and not an owner’s
mark.
This box needed only some few gluing of some of the ends of the
"belts" and is in a very nice original condition considering
the age.
All the metal parts (lock, key, etc...) are original and working.

Caja Biedermeier tardío.
Démosle el nombre de perla negra que no desvela
su belleza al primer vistazo. Tiene la apariencia de una maleta
de mimbre de esos tiempos cerrada por dos cinchas de cuero con
sus hebillas en la tapa.
Estas partes están talladas de un modo muy cuidadoso y
detallado. Los lados y frentes de la caja han sido tallados de
modo que dan la apariencia de ramas paralelas. Las cinchas fueron
embutidas y encoladas después de que el cuerpo fuera montado.
Esta es una de las pocas cajas que no están chapadas sino
realizada en madera maciza, (la mayoría de ellas tiene
un cuerpo de confiera, generalmente pino). La madera puede ser
tilo u otra madera adecuada para la talla. Esta teñida
de un marrón muy oscuro por lo que parece casi negra.
La edad de esta caja es difícil de estimar. Observando
el trabajo de cerrajería puede haber sido realizada alrededor
de 1850-60. Es interesante el hecho de que presenta la firma “S
BS.” en el fondo. La manera en que esta estampada la firma
hace muy probable que sea una firma de artesano y no del propietario.
Esta caja ha necesitado solo un poco de cola en algunos de los
finales de las cinchas y esta en una muy buena condición
original teniendo en cuenta la edad. En la esquina derecha del
fondo presenta una pequeña fisura que está siendo
observada y será encolada si es necesario. Todas las partes
metálicas (cerradura, llave, etc...) son originales y funcionando
