A rosewood box inlaid with mother of pearl and metal,
depicting flowers. In the centre a mother of pearl inlaid with
the word “Cigares”, Cigars in French.
For us the origin may be Anglo Indian, around 1840-60 due the
mother of pearl work. As the text is French we have to think that
was made for the French market.
The top is decorated with Mother of pearl flowers in a rich floral
pattern with very detailed accents and the sides with silvered
metal ends.
The small pieces of mother of pearl would have been cut out with
jewellers piercing saw. Recesses are then cut in the rosewood
to take the inlay elements.
The flowers are finished with a subtle carving that has been dyed
making the petals more naturalistic.
This type of work was influenced by the French use of tortoiseshell
and metal in inlay. (Boule Marquetry).
The escutcheon and the small plate on the front, are both made
of mother of pearl too.
The lock and the hinges are the original ones. The key is an old-new
replacement.

y metal representando flores. En el centro incrustación
de nácar con la palabra “Cigares”, puros en
francés.
Para nosotros su origen puede ser Anglo Indio, hacía 1840-60
dado el trabajo en nácar.
Como el texto está en francés tenemos que pensar
que fue fabricada para el mercado francés.
La tapa está decorada con flores de nácar en un
rico patrón floral con acentos muy detallados y las esquinas
con remates de metal plateado.
Las pequeñas piezas de nácar deben haber sido cortadas
con una sierra de perforar de joyero.
El palosanto entonces es cortado para formar los huecos en que
debe encajar el nácar.
Las flores están acabadas con una delicada talla que ha
sido teñida haciendo mas natural el aspecto de los pétalos.
Este tipo de trabajo fue influido por el tipo de marquetería
que se hacía en Francia con caparazón de tortuga
y metal. (Marquetería Boule).
La bocallave y la pequeña placa del frente son también
de nácar.
La cerradura y las bisagras son las originales. La llave se ha
reemplazado por una nueva antigua.
