Important Art Nouveau silver cup by Hermann (?)
Wahl around 1905, donated by the grand duke of Hesse 1909.
The cup stands on a flat, disc like round stand arching to an
8-sided base with bud like decoration.
From the base raises a fine shaft with an 8-folded vertical structure
and a node on each end. The bottom of the 8-sided cup takes up
the design of the base. The high arching lid leads over from the
8-sided to a round form. The lid is decorated with a frieze of
oak leaves and has oak leaf and acorn knob. The oak leave is a
German symbol given to the winners of contests.
The material is massive silver, forged, parts cast and partially
gilded. Chased decoration at the foot.
The name of the artist who designed this piece is Hermann or Carl
(Karl) Wahl. Although we know the name of the artist who may be
the designer of this piece but until now we couldn’t find
more information about this person.
The silversmith work was done by the company Wilhelm Binder in
Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany for E.L.Vietor, provider of
silverware by appointment of the court of the dukes of Hesse,
Darmstadt.
The inscription around the foot of the cup says translated: Prize
of honour by his royal highness the Grand Duke of Hesse and at
Rhine. Singers contest Worms 1909. Here the german text: “Ehrenpreis
Sr. Königl. Hoheit des Großherzogs von Hessen u. bei
Rhein. Gesangswettstreit Worms 1909.“
Being a wonderful sample of art nouveau silversmiths work already
the inscription at the foot makes this item an must-have for each
high class collection.
The grand duke Ernst Ludwig (*1868; † 1937)
is one of the most important persons in the history of German
art nouveau. Being one of the most modern thinking ruling aristocrats
(and preferred grandchild of Queen Victoria) of imperial Germany
under emperor Wilhelm II and having artistic talents in 1899 he
initiated and funded the artists colony in Darmstadt. Situated
in a part of the city called Mathildenhöhe it became the
heart of the Jugendstil-movement in Germany. (The colony survived
the times with few damage and is an amazing destination).
He invited important artists like Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen,
Ludwig Habich, Bernhard Hoetger, Albin Müller and Joseph
Maria Olbrich. The objective for the artists was to develop new,
forward-looking forms of architecture and living. In the year
1901 the first exhibition of the colony took place followed by
3 more in 1904, 1908 and 1914. Displayed were the houses that
were built by the artists including the interior decoration from
the wallpaper to the furniture under the “total art-work”
concept, and some temporary buildings that were erected only for
the exhibition. The exhibitions were widely recognized, much wider
than the grand duke and the artists had been expecting.

WTB is the maker’s mark of Wilhelm Binder, the "T“
symbolizes a hammer, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, founded
in 1869.

La copa se eleva desde una base en forma de disco plano arqueándose
hacia una base de 8 caras con decoración de brotes. Desde
la base se eleva un fino fuste estriado con una estructura de
8 pliegues y un nudo al principio y al final de este. La parte
inferior de la copa con 8 caras, continua el diseño de
la base. La alta tapa arqueada conduce la forma de 8 facetas a
una forma redonda. La tapa está decorada con un friso de
hojas de roble alrededor y acabada en un tirador formado por hojas
alrededor de una bellota. La hoja de roble es un símbolo
Alemán que se otorga a los ganadores de concursos.
El material es plata maciza, forjada, partes fundidas y parcialmente
doradas. Decoración grabada en la base.
El nombre del artista que diseñó esta pieza es Hermann
o Carl (Karl) Wahl. A pesar de que conocemos el nombre del artista
que puede haber sido el diseñador, hasta ahora no hemos
podido encontrar mas información acerca de el.
El trabajo de platería fue realizado por la compañía
Wilhelm Binder en Schwäbisch Gmünd, Alemania para E.L.
Vietor, designado como proveedor oficial de menaje de plata para
la corte de los Duques de Hesse en Darmstadt.
La inscripción grabada alrededor de la base dice traducida:

Siendo en sí mismo una maravillo ejemplo art nouveau de
trabajo de platero, de hecho la inscripción de la base
convierte a este artículo en un imprescindible en una colección
de alta clase.
El Gran Duque Ernst Ludwig (*1868; † 1937)
es una de las personas mas importantes en la historia del art
nouveau Alemán. Siendo uno de los aristócratas gobernantes
de pensamiento mas moderno (y nieto preferido de la Reina Victoria
de Inglaterra) de la Alemania imperial gobernada por el Emperador
Wilhelm II y teniendo talento artístico, inició
y fundó en 1899 la colonia de artistas en Darmstadt. Situada
en una parte de la ciudad llamada Mathildenhöhe, se convirtió
en el corazón del movimiento Jugendstil en Alemania. (La
colonia ha sobrevivido a los tiempos con escasos daños
y es un destino asombroso).
Invitó a importantes artistas como Peter Behrens, Hans
Christiansen, Ludwig Habich, Bernhard Hoetger, Albin Müller
y Joseph Maria Olbrich. El objetivo para los artistas fue desarrollar
nuevas y avanzadas formas de arquitectura y modo de vida. En el
año 1901 se celebró la primera exposición
de la colonia que fue seguida por 3 mas, en 1904, 1908 y 1914.
Se mostraron las casas que construyeron los artistas diseñando
incluso la decoración interior desde el papel de las paredes
hasta el mobiliario bajo en concepto de la “obra de arte
total” así como algunos edificios temporales que
fueron erigidos solo para la exposición. Las exposiciones
fueron ampliamente reconocidas, mucho mas extensamente que lo
que el Gran Duque había esperado.
